On 25 October, at 14:00, we are gathering in the halls of the Theatre Museum for a curatorial tour of the exhibition "Ukrainian Theatre Costume of the XX-XXI centuries: Identity, Context, Landscape" b

Together we will look at the works of Ukrainian artists who worked on the creation of theatre costumes at different times, talk about the identity of the national scenography, the Mykola Sadovsky Theatre, where Vasyl Krychevsky and Ivan Buryachok worked as artists, the contribution of avant-garde artists Anatol Petrytsky and Vadym Meller to the development of Ukrainian theatre and Ukrainian art in general, and consider the works of artists who shape the face of theatre and the art of theatre costume in Ukraine today.


The tour will be led by Tetiana Rudenko, the chief curator of the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema Arts of Ukraine, a researcher of Ukrainian avant-garde theatre and the works of Vadym Meller and Anatol Petrytskyi, and curator of the international project "Ukrainian Theatre Costume of the XX-XXI Centuries: Identity, Context, Landscape" by the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema Arts of Ukraine.


The exhibition "Ukrainian Theatre Costume of the XX-XXI centuries. Identity, Context, Landscape" presents the works of Ukrainian artists who worked on the creation of theatre costumes at different times - Ivan Buriachok (1877-1936), Vadym Meller (1884-1962), Anatol Petrytskyi (1895-1964), Alla Horska (1929-1970), Myron Kyprian (1930-2019), Yevhen Lysyk (1930-1991), as well as works by practicing artists who form the face of theatre and the art of theatrical costume in Ukraine today - Hanna Ipatieva, Danylia Kolot, Yulia Zaulichna, Olena Polishchuk, Liudmyla Nahorna, Liubov Dushyna, Natalia Rydvanetska, Inessa Kulchytska, Oleh Tatarinov, Bohdan Polishchuk. In addition, the exhibition features the works of talented students of several universities who are now starting their professional careers: Vasilina Bezherianu, Anna Mashkovska, Maria Chornoshkur, Kateryna Marchenko, and Kateryna Tyshchenko.


At the exhibition you will see:


  • Four original avant-garde theatre costumes from the collection of the Theatre Museum:


    two costumes by Anatol Petritsky and two costumes by Vadim Meller;


  • Rare archival photographs and shots from glass negatives from the museum's collection illustrating the evolution of theatrical costumes;


  • Sketches of theatre costumes dating from 1910-2020;


  • Footage from contemporary theatre productions;


  • Theatrical costumes provided by the Lviv National Academic Ukrainian Drama Theatre named after Maria Zankovetska, the Ivano-Frankivsk National Academic Drama Theatre named after Ivan Franko, and the artists participating in the exhibition project;


  • Bohdan Polishchuk's installation "RED. WHITE. CHANGING".

The exhibition is part of an international project implemented by the Scenography Gallery NGO in partnership with the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine, the PLACEID Territorial Marketing Development Foundation (Poland), with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

The exhibition will be open until 31 October.

Admission is at the price of a museum ticket:


- Adult - 100 UAH


- For schoolchildren - 30 UAH


- For students and pensioners - 50 UAH


- For Kyiv residents - 50 UAH
